Blood Bank

Ran 20 miles in 3-4 inches of snow and frigid winds, total time was about 4 hours and 30 minutes.

I was crazy enough to bring my camera along and document the journey :

Is it too late to head back inside?

Warming up - mile 0.5

Still trying to get warm - mile 1

Stopping to do some pull-ups - mile 1.5

Very windy at the Fairgrounds - mile 2

Busey Woods & getting warm - mile 3

Leaving Crystal Lake Park - Mile 4

Mile 4.25 - rolling along now

Carle Park - mile 5

The Arboretum, mile 5.75

The Arboretum, mile 6.5

Entering the South Farms road at mile 8

35mph wind at my back - feels good (for now)

Feeling good at mile 8.5

Wait, how did I get onto a Russian steppe?

Turning into a side wind, uh oh....

The more pain I feel, the better the picture?

I'm cold at mile 10

Still cold, and the sun is going down

Mile 13, but I'm still running, so no sandwich!

Back to Busey Woods, mile 15

Loop 1, mile 16 - The more incoherent I become,
the more strange the picture.

Loop 2, mile 17 - racing the sun!

Loop 3, mile 18 - I want to stop,
because I can't beat the sun,
but I keep running

Loop 4, mile 19 - I'm getting warm, and yes,
I am going to be finished soon.

Mile 19.25 - I finish soon after....

I listened to this song during my run :

Awesome run James. Thanks for posting those pics. Looks like a great area to run, in spite of the weather. Do you carry water on these longer runs or what?
The weather will be more accomodating in April for your ultras...won't it?

Thanks, JD.

Yes, there are some nice spots to run here. It is not Colorado Springs or Ashland, Oregon, but still has some open areas to feel isolated.

I usually don't carry water, and I did not bother stopping anywhere today to get something to eat, so I somehow managed to exercise for 5 hours with no food or water. That is one reason I gained some confidence for my ultras in April.

Last year I think it was cold for Clinton Lake, and McNaughton was awful, 20-30 degrees and rain/snow. That is why I am trying to toughen up now - I want to be ready for the worse.

What a great run! I need to take my camera with me sometime. I can't believe you ran for 5 hours with no food or water! I'm impressed. Thanks for sharing your run with us James.
